Spread the Word!

Spread the word--May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. Unlike Gay Pride, which celebrates LGBT life, IDAHOT is an opportunity to remind us all that the war has not yet been won, and that homophobia and transphobia still persists around the world. The day was chosen in recognition of May 17, 1990, the date when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental disesases.

IDAHOT started in 2005 as an initiative of Louis-Georges Tin, a French scholar and activist and the author of The Dictionary of Homophobia, an acclaimed and comprehensive history of homophobia around the world, published in French in 2003 and in English in 2008. In December 2008, Louis-Georges led a contingent of the French government before the UN General Assembly, where they presented a delcaration for the decriminalization of homosexuality worldwide. The declaration has since been signed by many world leaders, including US President Barack Obama earlier this year. Eighty-six member states of the United Nations still criminalize consensual same sex among adults, including seven where the crime is punishable by death.
