Come celebrate Téa Mutonji's award-winning story collection Shut Up You're Pretty, which recently finished as runner-up in this year's Canada Reads competition on CBC, defended by actor Kudakwashe Rutendo. Téa and Kudakwashe will be in conversation with Vivek Shraya, editor of the VS. Books imprint of Arsenal Pulp Press which published Téa's book.

Heartache, disease, new love, death. Our characters often have to navigate life-altering moments right there on the page. As writers, how do we carefully convey the weight of their emotional responses? How do we sidestep clichés, choose revealing prose, and ground the overwhelming feelings of the moment in the truth of our characters? Through prose excerpts, instruction, group discussions, and writing exercises, this highly interactive workshop led by Vincent Anioke (Perfect Little Angels) will explore various techniques for handling woes, thrills, and joys in ways that feel truthful and engaging.

Téa Mutonji, author of Shut Up You're Pretty, the runner-up in this year's Canada Reads competition on CBC, is part of a virtual Canada Reads reunion as part of the FOLD (Festival of Literary Diversity) on April 28.

In this virtual conversation with Executive Director (and Canada Reads superfan) Jael Richardson (moderator), four of the 2024 finalists discuss what it was like to have their books selected for the show, and the highs and lows of watching the live debates. This event will be followed by a virtual meet-and-greet where fans can join a roundtable to meet the authors!
